Closing the Gap - Improving Indigenous Access to Mainstream Primary Care

As part of the Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health initiatives, the Division has been funded to improve Indigenous Access to Mainstream Primary Care.

 The aim of the program is to contribute towards closing the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians by improving access to culturally sensitive primary care services for Indigenous Australians.

The Division’s role includes coordinating and supporting the various Closing the Gap measures relevant to general practice while improving the capacity in general practice to deliver culturally appropriate primary care services.

Program objectives include:
• Increase access to mainstream primary care services by Indigenous Australians;
• Improve the capacity of general practice to deliver culturally sensitive primary care services;
• Increase the uptake of Indigenous specific MBS items including Indigenous health checks and follow up items;
• Foster collaboration and support between mainstream primary care and the Indigenous health sector.
